The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) has commenced the sale of surplus coal to the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), formalized by a memorandum of understanding signed on September 18, 2026. This strategic pivot marks WBPDCL's transition from reliance on Coal India Limited to self-sufficiency in coal sourcing since the 2024-25 fiscal year, allowing it to monetize excess production from its captive mines. Under the agreement, WBPDCL will supply 3.5 million tonnes of coal to NTPC by March 2027. The transaction is projected to generate over Rs 1,000 crore in revenue for the West Bengal state government. This arrangement enhances operational flexibility for both entities, enabling NTPC to diversify its fuel sources while WBPDCL improves its financial stability and market positioning. The deal aligns with regulatory frameworks such as the MMDR Act, 2021, which permits the sale of surplus coal after compliance requirements are met. Additionally, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced plans for the stock market listing of WBPDCL, aiming to strengthen the corporation's financial transparency and capacity for future investments in renewable energy projects
