MP Seeks Ashok Chakra for Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar

Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry decoration, upon Captain Smit Machchhar. The request follows a violent mid-air incident on Flydubai Flight FZ1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. During the flight, Captain Machchhar was severely injured and allegedly stabbed by his Omani co-pilot in an apparent terror-driven attempt to crash the aircraft. Despite sustaining grave wounds, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew to restrain the assailant. A reserve crew subsequently piloted the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, ensuring all 174 to 180 occupants disembarked without injury. Deora emphasized that Machchhar’s actions embodied extraordinary courage and selflessness, noting that the Ashok Chakra is eligible for civilian citizens and recognizes conspicuous bravery other than in the face of the enemy. Prime Minister Modi praised the pilot’s composure during a video call, describing the event as averting a tragedy akin to 9/11. Indian Ambassador Dipak Mittal confirmed Machchhar is in stable condition recovering in a UAE hospital. The Federation of Indian Pilots has also urged the government to consider a National Bravery Award for the captain
