Editorial Deep Dive & Context
Sreeji G.S., a Grade-II public health inspector at the Tirurangadi Municipality in Malappuram district, was arrested by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau on October 1, 2026. The arrest followed a successful sting operation targeting alleged bribery related to municipal licensing. Sreeji had demanded Rs 10,000 from a complainant seeking to regularize a license for a newly opened restaurant and juice shop after an online application was rejected due to formatting issues. Acting on intelligence, the Malappuram Vigilance unit arranged a trap where the complainant handed over the cash at Sreeji’s rented accommodation in Parappanangadi around 6:45 p.m. Upon realizing the vigilance team had arrived, Sreeji allegedly flushed the currency notes into the toilet. He initially provided contradictory answers but later admitted to the act. Investigators dismantled the toilet fixture and pumped high-pressure water through the drainage system, successfully recovering the money lodged in the pipe. Sreeji was produced before the Vigilance Court at Kozhikode. The incident highlights ongoing efforts by the Kerala government to combat corruption in local administrative bodies, with Vigilance Director Manoj Abraham urging citizens to report such incidents via dedicated toll-free channels
